Dubai Event Hit by Injuries

The men’s Dubai Tennis Championships will start next week without five of the top seven players who were scheduled to compete, mostly because of injuries. Top-ranked Rafael Nadal (knee) and No. 2 Roger Federer (back) withdrew early last week.

Since then, the defending champion Andy Roddick, No. 5 Nikolay Davydenko (undisclosed injury) and No. 9 Fernando Verdasco (ankle) have pulled out. That leaves No. 3 Novak Djokovic and No. 4 Andy Murray as the top two seeds in the draw announced for the $2 million tournament.

Roddick said Friday that he would not attend because he did not agree with a decision by the United Arab Emirates to deny a visa to the Israeli Shahar Peer to play in the women’s tournament.
