MACHUPICCHU "Wonder of the World"
Machupiqchu (Quechua: Machupiqchu "old mountain") is a pre-Colonial citadel, located at 2400 m. above sea level (8000 ft.) It´s located on the top of the mountain, on the left bank of the Urubamba River, 110 kilometers (68 miles) from the trainstation of Aguas Calientes, stretching over an area of 5 km². Often referred to as "The Lost City of the Incas", Machu Picchu citadel is one of the Seven Wonders of the World; it´s one of most popular archaeological sites in the world, and the most important historical site of Peru.
According to modern studies Machupiqchu was built in the fifteenth century AD during the reign of Pachacuteq (1438 -1471). All the documents that speak of this Inca construction are attributed imperial Cusco, as well as most of the great buildings of the Inca Empire. One hundred years later after the reign of Pachacuteq, the Inca Empire was invaded by the Spanish, yet Machupiqchu remained undiscovered by the Spaniards, which is verified by documents later recovered. For many years Machupiqchu remained hidden by its natural surroundings until the arrival of some local explorers and scientific discovery by Hiram Bingham on July 24, 1911. Bingham was professor of history at Yale University USA. Since then, Machupiqchu has become a major tourist attraction for people across the globe. |
