Cusco has been proclaimed as a Cultural site of Heritage and Humanity by UNESCO, and was the cradle of the Inca civilization and the principal city of the Empire of Tahuantinsuyo, considered by the Incas as the "Navel of the World.”
According to legend Cusco was founded by Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo between the XI and XII centuries and then later discovered by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro, in 1534.
With an area of 71,892 km2 and 3,360 meters. Cusco is located in the south east of Peru, its northern limits are Junín and Ucayali. The cities of Puno and Arequipa are located in the south west, Apurimac and Ayacucho, and to the east there is the plain Mother of God.
It is a city that offers its visitors a variety of cultural, historical and natural attractions. Just the large number of archaeological sites, museums, churches and places in Cusco makes it the most important tourist center of Peru.
Cusco's climate is characterized by two well-defined periods, the dry and humid seasons, with an average temperature of 11 º C. In the forested areas on the other hand, temperatures can reach up to 25 º C. |
Cusco "Navel of the World" |

In Qoricancha (Golden field) resided Willac Uma, high priest of the god Inti (the Sun) who, along with tarpuntaes, was responsible for everything to do with astronomy and the main religious ceremonies of the Inca Empire. It is important to note that within the sacred complex there are parts that are intended to worship other deities as Wiracocha Illapa and Mama Quilla.
The temple of gold and silver represents the main deities and wonderful flora and fauna of Peru. These sculptures, delicately carved by craftsmen of Chimu origin were looted by Spanish conquistadors who arrived in Cusco in 1533. |
QORICANCHA |
Sacsayhuaman is a word in Quechua (the native language of Cusco); the part Sacsay means to feed or fill, and Huaman means hawk. The falcon bird of prey, whose habitat is the Andes region, was the protector of the first Inka Manko Qhapaj.
Its construction had begun between the XIV and XV. The completion of the town took more than seven decades and required the work of some 20 000 men.
At the time of the Incas, it was called " the House of Sun" and was a major religious center in the local tradition, when the Spanish arrived they thought it was a fortress because of its position and shape, which boasts three levels whose walls made of finely polished andesite and gave the impression of a fortress that was couldn’t be penetrated.
The first wall is most impressive because of its imposing presence; it is made of finely carved rocks from 90 to 125 tons each, making it impossible to access another site other than the three entrances to the complex. The walls have are an average of 360 m. long. It is located 3 km from the Plaza de Armas in Cusco, and can be reached by a walk, or by transportation Cusco – Pisaq. |
SACSAYHUMAN |
The word “Q'enko” means maze, literally twisted with many turns. Apparently this was a ceremonial center and place for ritual, it has an amphitheater with 19 niches, and there is a way of income to the subterranean labyrinth, the channel has top and carved shapes.
Integra, a semicircular courtyard defined by an isometric parameter with several large niches surrounding a stone or thin waka enclosed in a compound. It is a kind of image within its own chapel. The mummy of Pachacuteq and his relatives found by Polo de in Tòqokachi were probably housed in Q'enko. It is located 4 kilometers from Plaza de Armas, following the path of Sacsayhuaman, Cusco road - Pisac. |
QENQO |
Is an Inca archaeological site, located on top of a hill, which used to be a military post and an administrative center. Because of its proximity to Tambomachay, it is believed to have a connection with his defense and control of the road to Calca, which led to Antisuyo (jungle province of the Incas). It is a fortress formed by terraces, stairways, towers, niches, platforms, and a wall that defends the whole construction of circular shape. It is located 7 km from the square, road Cusco - Pisac. |
PUCAPUCARA |
Tambo means collective accommodation, with everything you need to accommodate many people who are only around for a short period of time; machay, roughly translated, means a resting place. The name comes from the Inca times.
The tradition knows this monument as “ñusta bath” because of the special circumstance that exist; the two aqueducts have clean water all year, come from unknown places known only to the builders, and it seems to sprout from the bases of the Inca construction. The volume is always the same, the liquid falls by a landfill that was a liturgical source known as the Bath of the Inka, and in front of this building stands a huge circular keep that serves as lookout spot.
The building has three corridors and terraces which is equivalent to three floors. The buildings are of good quality, with irregular polyhedral very well assembled without mortar or mud. It is located 8 km from the main square, road Cusco - Pisac. |
TAMBOMACHAY |
Located on one side of the “Plaza de Armas” in Cusco, it was built on what was the most important temple at the time of the Incas, one dedicated to God Wiraqocha. The platform construction has the form of a Latin cross and is made up of five ships basilica style. It was built in 1560 and then later completed and consecrated in 1668. Unlike most temples in Cusco, it wasn’t damaged by the earthquake which struck in 1650. Like Lima’s Cathedral, Cusco’s has Gothic Renaissance and Baroque Mannerism characteristics. Flanked by two solid towers, the sides are mannerist, and the centre, slightly baroque.
This splendid Renaissance-style Cathedral contains also baroque and neoclassical influence. Its carved wooden pulpit and choir stalls are magnificent works of craftsmanship in Cusco. It also contains paintings from the Cusco School of works by Diego Quispe Tito, Basilio Santa Cruz Pumacallo, Basilio Pacheco and Marcos Zapata, creator of a unique "Last Supper" in which the main dish is roast guinea pig. |
