MARAS MORAY
.jpg) It is located at 3.380 meters above sea level. In the town of Maras, you can see the chain of snowy mountains at the Sacred Valley and the Vilcabamba. Today this district retains the attractive pre-Hispanic, pre-colonial culture, and the town highlights the colonial doorways with coats of the nobles and chieftains from the sixteenth and twentieth centuries.
Maras was a necessary step for the carriers and their mule trains who were bringing tropical products and especially coca leaves from the high jungle of Cusco to meet the needs of the city of Cusco and the country. It has a church made of bricks typical of small-town religious architecture, in which atrium is a cross carved in granite. Within the church there is the famous Cusco School painting representing the apostles, whose author is the Quechua artist Don Antonio Inka Roqa Sinchi who was a native of Maras and painted with the picture for the church. |
MARAS |
The Impressive salt farm, located in a place called Qoripujio, is situated approximately 4 km from the town of Maras. It has salt mines which were already being used during Inca times as a means of economic exchanges and security. From Maras you can go to visit the salt mines by a bridle path, where it is common to find mules that carry the bags of natural salt extracted from mines. |

.jpg) Moray is Located about 53 km away from Cusco, at an altitude of 3.385 meters above sea level. There are gigantic natural holes that were used to build agricultural terraces with their irrigation canals on its contours. What is striking is the average annual temperature difference between the top and bottom of the holes, this difference reaches up to 15 ° C. The largest hole has a depth of 150 meters and the average platform height is 1.80 meters between them. The structures here are typical of the Inca’s times; however, some suggest, that it is from earlier times, at least in the lower terraces.
It is also estimated that the base is on a natural rock formation, and porous filter aid into the earth at the bottom of the holes don’t produce flooding in the rainy season. |
