Typical Andean village 32 km. southeast of Cusco, on a mountain, where lies the archaeological site of Pisac, made up of numerous neighborhoods and different places including the main one is known as Intihuatana, admired for their fine finish to their premises. Also of great interest is the pre-Hispanic cemetery, the largest found in this part of the continent.
Pisac - Inca buildings are remarkable for the huge platforms that surround the mountains, it consisted of polished stone structures, fully assembled, and surrounded by watchtowers and observation points. |
PISAQ ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK |
In the main square, under trees, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, one can witness the craftsmanship of genuine Peruvian products, from the diverse and colorful variety of the textiles to the decorative pottery being offered there.
On Sunday, in the old temple, Mass is celebrated in Quechua with the assistance of locals and mayor of the community. |
PISAQ CRAFT MARKET |
According to the Aymara language, Ollantaytambo derives from the word ulla-nta-wi, which means "place to look down", the word tambo, was added later. In Quechua the other principle pre-Hispanic language, the name comes from the word Ollanta (which is the name of an Inca captain, whose history is maintained as an oral tradition) and the term, dairy which means "city that offers accommodation."
The archaeological complex of Ollantaytambo was a strategic military, religious and agricultural location. The architectural scene is of exceptional interest in the size, style and originality of this place.
Ollantaytambo is one of the most unique and amazing archaeological sites in Peru, the techniques used in the construction of its massive walls, with pieces megalithic polyhedra corresponding to irregular in shape and finish has not yet been fully discovered. Each stone is in itself an independent work of art in relation to the other, with sides, angles and different volumes.
The town was divided into rectangular blocks with a well-planned geometrical layout giving the impression of being a town designed by modern architects. Narrow streets open towards the river Urubamba and every block or court is composed of a set of houses that share the same door as the courtyard. In the village all the streets were made straight and narrow, which have inhabited continuously since the time of the Incas. |
OLLANTAYTAMBO |
The current main square where there are many fairs has a twelve-Inca wall niches, each of 2 m. high and 1.50 m. wide. This wall was used as an ornament and to protect another place that you can see close to the church. It also features colonial arches in the corners of the square, buildings of cement and adobe walls, huge rooms with windows, doors and platforms that are a small sample of the greatness of the Inca culture. Chincheros Fair is the largest in the region due to the high quality of craft products that are sold there, and Chincheros is internationally recognized for its excellent work and beauty. In these shows we can see that barter (ancient form of exchange crops) is still in force, in Chinchero, granddaughters of the princesses inkaicas, continue to weave wool and garments, as did the ajllas for the children of the Sun in Imperial Cuzco. Its fertile lands are excellent producers of potatoes, ollucos, geese, beans, barley and wheat, which are the backbone of agricultural trade in the area. |
