ITINERARY |
It is located in the province of Quispicanchis, to the east of Cusco city at about 32 km (20 miles) "Pikillaqta" came from two Quechua words that mean “lousy town" (piki = louse; llaqta = town); But that's not the original name of the area, the original name is unknown, although many historians refer to this area with the name "Muyuna", "Muyna" or "Mohina." It appears that the site began to be called "Pikillaqta" during the final years of the colonial era or the beginning of the republic, the reason is unknown. Pikillaqta is a pre-Hispanic site which is located at 3350 meters above sea level (11000 feet) and belonged to the city of Ayacucho, which was part of the Wari dominion. Wari culture is a mixture of different civilizations; the Warpa, Nazca and Tiawanako. It started out in territorial expansion and began the invasion of Wari in the Cusco valley around 750 AD and continued to develope until about 1200. In the early development of the Inca period, the Waris were defeated and conquered in this region but the city refused to be part of Tawantinsuyo. Today the city contains about 700 buildings, 200 "kanchas" (apartments) and 504 "qolqas" (warehouses) and different buildings. The population is approximately ten thousand people. |
PIKILLACTA |
It is a National Archaeological Park located east of the city of Cusco, covering a territory of approximately 2200 hectares located in the district of Oropesa, province of Quispicanchis. To reach the main archaeological monument is a distance 5 km (3 miles) the road starts from km 18 (11.2milla) Cusco-Puno road, north and crossing the creek of "Watanay." A mile off the paved road is the small town of Tipon. This area is part of the village was under the control of Quispicanchis of San Lorenzo de los Valles (1650 -1802). It was undoubtedly the most important monument of the colonial time. The original Quechua name of the park is unknown. You can see a diverse group of royal rooms that according to Victor Angles were built by the Inca Wiraqocha as an abode and refuge for his father Yawar Wakaq who returned after the war against Chankas. This group of villages located at an altitude of 3500 meters about sea level. (11,480 feet). In addition there is an impressive crop area that contains 12 very fertile terraces, and whose walls were built with well carved stones. Even more impressive is the irrigation system that is still serving agriculture, and has the advantage that people are able to drink the water in the spring season. The stones that channel the river were carved out and finely calculated, with almost vertical drops making somewhat of a hydraulic engineering work. Due to its location and the presence of a surrounding wall Tipón was very exclusive; interdependent with several other sectors such Intiwatana to the West "Pukutuyoq", "Pukara", "Hatun Wayk'o", etc. To the southeast of this group, almost vertical mountain surface is a cemetery named "Pitopuqyo" today has plundered tombs. In this place there were large amounts of cultural relics, now you can find a lot of broken ceramic pieces. |
TIPON |
Andahuaylillas is located on 3.122 meters above sea level to and kilometers from Cusco. You enter through a path surrounded by trees and small houses with tiled roofs and parts of Pucara. These adobe buildings, plastered with mud, are often mistaken for hills in the distance. Finally we reach the square Andahuaylillas, one of the most beautiful spots in the valley. The vast space, shaded with trees Pisonis, entices you to stop and enjoy the tranquility of the place. Miraculously still standing ancient houses that have mural decorations on their walls. Andahuaylilla’s Church regarded as the "Sistine Chapel of America" is a true wonder and has to be counted as one of Cusco´s and even one of Americas great treasures. This is a national treasure that combines the best of painting and sculpture in Cusco and is an excellent example of mural art. Everything creates a sense of wonder and amazement which is difficult to replicate anywhere. No one knows in which direction to look, because one is surrounded by the most magnificent decorations. The principle of "abhors a vacuum" pre-Columbian art appears to have moved here. It is impossible to record it all and capture all the decorative details that appear before you, they seem to be infinite. The church was the center of a reduction and was founded by the Jesuits, according to studies by the Bureau husbands.
They argue that the temple was built in the seventeenth century. It´s first name was "St. Peter the Apostle" and indeed, many paintings are dedicated to San Pedro (Saint Peter) and San Pablo (Saint Paul). These images preside all through the temple, but the main altar is dedicated to the Rosario Virgin. |
